From Félix Koegler:
"I have an argus engine mainly for training and I had this issue from the beginning.
One good friend of mine who is an engine guru (he works for a RC fuel company in France) has also an argus engine. His engine runs awesome. I didn't understand why mine wasn't running great. We compared the shimming of the button and he had 0.1mm more than me.
I added 0.1mm shim and now the engine is great! No more blipping!
Try it !Also, I reduced the throttle opening speed by 20 to 30% as today's servos are too fast for a carb. As you open it too quickly, the engine just can't accelerate that fast (physically speaking) so it just ends up leaning up the engine (as the air enters too quickly).
Lowering the T\B servo speed will make your engine just a bit more rich on the bottom end. Sometimes you can lean it again and get better fuel mileage.
Just so you know, by lowering the servo speed I didn't feel any difference on the track (if the car is traction limited.)"
Comment from the Technical Advisor:
By lowering the compression ratio you also change ignition timing curve, the engine seemed to run with a retarded ignition point so the A\F mix burned later in the stroke, sometimes too late and besides causing erratic response that's wasted energy.
From Paco Topete:
"...sometimes measure is same but pin get minimal oval shape, If I am going to check it, will take the fine scale and measure it “around it” and making some pressure until measure changes, if change more than 0.02mm time for a new crankshaft.
In my experience with Ultimate, a Non hard coated crankshaft will last between 3-5 conrods, a hardened more than double, hardened one is easy to see by naked eye the areas that coat is fading…
The other test is dropping some thin oil (sewing machine oil) and moving piston by crankshaft till TDC and push up and down slightly…if there is bubbles the conrod has play, if conrod is new and there is bubbles, time to change crankshaft…"
From Paco Topete:
"...I put glowplug from prior main or qualy, for practicing, put a new one for quali day, save it for next race, put new one for lower mains or semi final, if I get into main or final I put a new one, glowplugs are expendable just as clutch or bearings."
From JQ:
"Always change it for a race. Use old ones in practice."
