Scott Walker about tyre warmers:
"We don't use them over here through winter; never seen them used to be honest. We just run the softest tyre. You could also use a tread pattern which generates more heat. Impact pins don't move too much so won't generate as much heat as taller pins."
Raymond Shell about AKA tread height:
"...every time our track gets slick with a loamy dust layer I go straight to City Blocks. Once the upper pin wears off the block they are not that great. They always cure my lack of steering but the rear loses side bite."
Jimmy Deprez about compound\temperature:
"If you feel reduced grip you can actually slow down, smooth out and you'll feel the grip return. I've done this out in the desert quite a bit on our really hot tracks.
Another one to try is to put some mediums on and see how many laps it takes for them to switch on. As for racing in the super cold, I don't have a lot of experience. I'd imagine a little heat, enough to get into the insert won't hurt. In my garage static test I already noticed change in stiffness just from a few minutes (using external heat)...wet track returns surface temp to 22-24C so you can get away with softer tire for about 8 minutes in hotter ambient weather.
So just enough for a qual.
That same soft tire on the dry hotter surface might get nervous or start to step out under larger slip angles later around 6 to 8 minutes.
The AKA tires are pretty sensitive to this."
