Gear ratios are used to adjust the speed and torque at the wheels, affecting how the car generates traction in different conditions. In 8th scale buggies we have 2 ways to adjust our overall ratio; the clutch bell and spur gear ratio, and the differential pinion and ring gear ratio. Combining these will give the overall ratio of the car.
With the 45/14 standard diff ratio the following overall ratios are found:
13T | 14T | |
---|---|---|
48T | 11.87 | 11.02 |
49T | 12.12 | 11.25 |

MYB0111-48 | 48T spur gear |
MYB0111-48LW | 48T lightweight spur gear |
MYB0111-49 | 49T spur gear |
MYB0111-49LW | 49T lightweight spur gear |
With the options of spur gear between 47, 48 and 49T spur gears, most are using the standard 13T clutch bell.
Using a smaller spur gear (or larger clutch bell) will increase top end speed and reduce acceleration. This is useful on large or low traction tracks.
Using a larger spur gear (or smaller clutch bell) will increase acceleration and reduce top end speed.
Differential gearing can be used to adjust the power delivery from the engine to the wheels.
Mayako currently offers 2 ratios. The standard 45/14T ratio provides smooth power delivery. The optional 43/13T ratio is more aggressive and "punchier" out the corner. For the majority of conditions, the 45/14T is good.
Both on and off power behaviour is affected by the differential ratio. This is due to the inertia of the components, with the smaller pinion gear being able to accelerate faster and also be slowed down faster off power. Generally the smaller pinion gear will be more aggressive.
At this time we do not "overdrive" or "underdrive" either end of the MX8 buggy. We use the same differential ratio at front and rear.
